How to choose a whitewater paddle

Step 1

Paddle length for whitewater

River running: 190-200 cm based on height and boat width. Creeking: shorter end (188-194 cm) for quick catches. Freestyle: 190-194 cm for vertical moves.

Step 2

Straight or bent shaft

Straight shaft is easier on wrists across long river days. Bent shaft transfers more power on sprint moves and park-and-play. Most paddlers start straight, upgrade to bent once the stroke is dialed.

Step 3

Blade layup

Aramid-carbon (Club) absorbs rock impact and lasts longest. 3K carbon (Racing/Elite) is stiffer and lighter but chips on rock contact. Match the layup to where you paddle.

Frequently asked questions

For Class III-IV rivers, 190-196 cm is standard. Shorter paddles (188-192 cm) give quicker strokes for steep creeking. Longer (196-200 cm) suit big volume rivers and larger paddlers.

Carbon saves weight and reduces fatigue across multi-hour river days. Aramid-carbon layups handle rock impact better than pure carbon. Beginners benefit from the lighter swing; experts benefit from the stiffer catch.
